Vermont, VT

Vermont is the 6th smallest state in the Union and is surpassed only by Alaska as the least populated state.  Vermont was the first state to be added to the United States after the Thirteen Colonies and also the first state to partially abolish slavery.  Its small size and population make the state itself and many cities within record holders for least population in various categories around the United States; such as least populous state capital.

Vermont’s economy is based heavily on corporate business activity and tourism.  Agriculture, quarrying, and manufacturing are traditional industries that declined in scale during the 20th century but still make up significant elements of the state economy due to increasing efficiency.  Skiing and hunting are popular tourist and recreational activities and many local tourist venues employ full time, year-round.

Most of the states population is spread along the western state line, primarily around Burlington.
